Security Fence Types

When it comes to protecting property from theft, vandalism or other threats, the most effective form of protection is a strong, durable fencing system. However, not all fencing systems are created equal and some are better suited to certain security applications than others. To ensure you select the best fencing option for your business, read on to learn about 4 common security fence types and how they compare.

Unlike decorative or privacy fences, security fencing is designed to offer a high level of deterrence. This is important because a fence alone won’t prevent a criminal from entering your property. Instead, a security fence can provide a visual barrier that will stop the criminal from even considering the area as a potential entry point.

Security fencing also typically offers a greater wall thickness and pipe diameter than demarcation or privacy fences. This increased resilience reduces the risk of an attack and makes the fence more difficult to overcome, especially when additional security measures are integrated into the structure. This may include spikes, barbed wire and razor coils (where legal) or a combination of both. Additional features such as buried foundations, crash-rated fence posts and sensors that monitor movement around the perimeter can also increase security levels.

While no fencing can be impenetrable, a security fence can effectively delay an intruder’s entry to the property by making it difficult or impossible to scale or jump over. This can be achieved by making the fence taller, increasing the amount of space that would be required to climb it and by adding extra security features such as lighting or CCTV cameras.

One of the most effective forms of security fencing is a steel palisade fence. A steel palisade fence features vertical pales or slats that curve outward at the top and is usually made of 8- to 14-feet high high-tensile steel which is very difficult to cut or break through.

Other high-security fencing options include chain link fences which consist of interlocking steel wires in a zigzag pattern and are often galvanized to improve their longevity. This fencing system is highly affordable, versatile and suitable for a variety of security purposes.

Welded wire mesh fences are also a popular choice for security fences as they are tough and difficult to penetrate. These fences are often made of galvanized steel or stainless steel and are welded together to create a solid barrier around an area that is still open enough for visibility. This type of security fence can be easily modified with the addition of security features such as spikes or barbed wire and can be used for a wide range of properties including industrial premises.
